We have a had a busy week in 2D with SATs and a lovely trip. I am very proud of all the children for their concentration and mature attitude during the tests. Well done!
Creative In triads the children have started to create maps and weather symbols for making a weather report. They used Atlases to choose a country and find out what the climate is like in that country. Next week the children will write their scripts and start to film their weather reports! Trip to George’s Marvellous Medicine On Tuesday we had a wonderful trip to the Madinat theatre to see George’s Marvellous Medicine. The children were familiar with the story from reading it in school. The show was brilliant and the children really got into the spirit of things responding when George asked the audience questions. The children loved how nasty grandma was and how she grew really tall after taking George’s disgusting medicine! We have only 11 left to complete to be in with a chance of winning a prize!!
GEMS have emailed you a parent survey, inviting you to give feedback about your experience at JPS. It is made up of 10 questions relating to your child's progress, school fees, school leadership, etc. and will help us better understand what we can improve upon at JPS for the next academic year One lucky class can win a ‘movie afternoon with popcorn! To stand a chance of winning a movie and popcorn afternoon, courtesy of Mrs McKeever, every parent in 2D needs to complete the survey on-line between now and 1st June 2015. Should there be more than one class that achieves a 100% response rate, we will go into a lucky draw (but there will be prizes for everyone who achieves 100%). English:
We have been working on our story writing this week. We have tried really hard to plan our story plot really carefully and include lots of details about the characters. The most important thing we worked n this week was reading over our own stories and improving them. Maths We have been working on 2 step word problems this week. They are really tricky and challenged us a lot! Science We have been looking at lots of different materials this week. We discovered that fabrics can be woven in 3 different ways- satin weave, plain weave and twill weave. The chidren loved using a magnifying glass to identify the different weaves. French We have been learning about hobbies in French this week. Survey GEMS have emailed you a parent survey, inviting you to give feedback about your experience at JPS. This week we have been thinking about setting. We thought about what we might see, hear, touch, taste and smell at the beach. This helped us think of lots of lovely WoW words to describe the beach setting. I loved reading the wonderful descriptions the children came up with. I would love to visit some of the amazing beaches that were described! We have also been thinking about characters. We have started to write an extended story using the character that children created for homework this week Maths We have been going back over how we work out the difference between two numbers. We know that difference means that we need to take away. We can calculate the difference either by using a number line or by partitioning the smaller number. In addition, we have used our right angled monsters to find right angles. We know that a right angle is formed when a vertical and horizontal line meet e.g. in a square or a rectangle. Furthermore, we have continued to work on direction. We learned a rhyme to help us remember North, South, East and West. Never Eat Shredded Wheat! Science This week we learned about Natural and Man Made Materials. We looked at labels on clothing to find out what they were made of and we also looked at the symbols on the labels to find out what they meant. E.g. use a cool iron or do not tumble dry. Creative We created lovely weaves this using paper. They are very striking! We also tried to replicate intricate patterns. In addition, we had a wonderful visitor to class this morning. Kael’s dad came to talk to us about his job as a producer. He explained the whole process of making a commercial. The children found it very interesting and informative! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us! Well done to Lisa who received the certificate this week. She write a wonderful description of a setting and also had beautiful handwriting.
English We have continued to work on our comprehension skills this week. We are learning to always look back in the text to find the answers. In addition, it is important to check work to pick up mistakes and go back over questions that have been missed.
We have also been working hard to improve the quality of our sentences. We can use adverbs and interest ‘wow’ words in our sentences to make them exciting. Furthermore, we can choose different openers and connectives to further enhance our writing. Maths We have been going back over adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers using the partition method. Furthermore, we have learned how to round numbers to the nearest ten and nearest hundred. We know that if the unit is 4 or lower we round down but if the unit is 5 or higher we round up. We also know how to round to the nearest hundred by looking at the tens. Science This week we tested materials to see which were the most absorbent. We talked about how we would make the test fair by using the same amount of water and the same size of material. French We have been learning how to say the name of family members in French. Blog
English: We have been focusing on our reading this week. We have been looking at lots of different texts and answering questions about them. We are trying hard to make sure that we read the question carefully. If you would like to practice at home, Bug Club is a really good resource! In writing we have been looking at tenses this week. We found out that a verb changes depending on the tense for e.g. an (past) run (present) will run (future) Maths We have started to learn about co-ordinates and direction. We can now give clear directions and find things on a grid. Next week we will move on to compass points and right angles Science We have continued to look at the properties of various materials. We discussed why certain materials were used for objects e.g. nylon in an umbrella because it is waterproof. We also discussed how some objects had several materials e.g, a chair had plastic and metal. SATs We have been having a little practice this week with SATs papers. You will find your child’s Maths and Reading paper in their folder. We have gone over the questions and answers in class already. You may find it useful to have a look at the paper and see how your child is doing and practice some of the areas that they are finding tricky! Please try not to panic if your child’s score is lower that you expected. We are still practicing and finding the little gaps in knowledge. With a little work at home and the ongoing learning in class, your child will continue to improve their score and their confidence! Dear Parents,
A few boys have lost their swimming trunks. Could you please have a little check at home if any of these have mistakenly come home with your child. Thank you in advance! English:
We have been learning all about riddles this week. We have had a great time, we found some of them really tricky. We wrote our own riddles about an apple! We know how to make sure our clues are not too easy. Some if the clues we thought up were really difficult, well done! Maths We have started to learn about weight. We had a look in our snack boxes and compared the weight of the snacks in them. We are working on our estimating skills for weight too. In addition, we have been doing some SATs style questions in preparation for SATs. Topic We had a look at the materials used for different types of clothing. We looked at labels to try to find out where are clothes are made. We know why we don’t need thick wooly jumpers in Dubai! French We have been learning about my family in French. We have had a wonderful day developing our Science Skills. We really are wonderful scientists. We especially loved our time in the Science lab when we made our own lava lamps with Ms Varley! In addition, we had great fun being “Shoemakers” today. We looked at materials and decided which ones were best for the type of shoe we designed. We had an Eco Fashion show; strutting our stuff in the playground! Look out Prada, Year 2 have got the fashion bug! English We have been learning all about poetry this week. We have had great fun! We know all about alliteration, rhymes, onomatopoeia, nonsense poems and tongue twisters! We even made up our own tongue twisters! Maths We have been learning about capacity. We had a look in our snack boxes and compared the capacity of the liquids in them. We were working on our estimating skills for capacity…the variety of shapes of the containers makes it so tricky! Topic We’ve started our new topic- “All dressed up combined with Media Magic”! It is sure to be really exciting! We kicked it all off with our wonderful fashion show! Well done to Noah, Lila, Sophie, Sophia, Wouter, Shuwayb, Keaghan and Lily for completing the active March Challenge. They all received red wrist bands for their efforts!
There is still time to hand in completed sheets after Easter for other children who have completed the challenge! We hope that you enjoyed the class assembly on Wednesday! I am sure that you will agree that the children did a wonderful job!
English: We wrote our very own explanation text this week. We used the Explanation Rainbow to help us include all of the important parts. Next term we will be working on poems and riddles. We will look at lots of examples and have a go at writing our own. Maths We completed some really tricky word problems about length. We made sure to use RUCSAC to make sure that we got the correct answer. Next term we will start off learning about capacity. Thank you to those parents who have sent in lots of bottles for us to explore. They will be really helpful. Topic We finished off our topic with a visit to the glow in the dark mini golf, we had a wonderful time! We are looking forward to our next topic- “All dressed up combined with Media Magic”! It was fun packed! Science We learned about food chains this week. We now know all about producers and primary and secondary consumers. Next term we will be learning all about materials and their properties. We will be visiting the glow in the dark Tee and Putt at Wafi Mall on Sunday.
This venue gives a great opportunity to develop our learning in this scientific area. The children will spot lots of reflective materials and see how darkness can be created. They will get the chance to really test their eyesight and see how tricky things can be in the absence of light. A fun and yet educational exit point for our exciting topic! Please send in reply slips and payment (65 dhs) on Sunday. Children should wear PE kit to school on Sunday and bring a snack in a labelled disposable bag and water bottle. We will eat lunch when we return to school around 12. |
